About the Abacoa
Community in Jupiter Florida...
Abacoa
is a 2,050-acre planned community in Palm Beach County and was
commissioned to accommodate the expected population growth over the next
thirty years while limiting urban sprawl and maintaining the existing
quality of life. The communitys overall form was shaped by the desire to
achieve four primary goals: environmental integrity and sustainability; a
wide range of affordable, market-rate housing types in a pedestrian-scaled
urban form; economic activity areas; and a community-wide transportation
system.
This 2,050-acre development is expected to be home to 6,000
families living in a mixture of housing types and price categories - single
family homes, condominiums, and townhomes throughout the neighborhoods
of Tuscany, Somerset, Martinique, Valencia and Antigua. A 700,000 square foot town
center currently includes a 16-screen multiplex Crown theatre, an 18-hole
public golf course, and a professional baseball stadium.
A planned hotel
and conference center will provide additional facilities that will make Abacoa an excellent venue for convening meetings to discuss community
building and new urbanism. Within easy walking distance to the town center
and housing is Florida Atlantic University (FAU) with 27 degree programs,
an interdisciplinary liberal arts Honors College, and an extensive
lifelong learning program. New public elementary and middle schools have
joined the FAU campus, making Abacoa a true K through 20 community. The
integration of businesses, residences, and the campus will provide the
opportunity to work, live, and study within the same community.
The
transportation system that will serve the area is also integrated into the
overall county transportation system. A bus loop will connect the
neighborhood centers and link to the proposed Tri-Rail station at the town
center. In addition, the plan utilizes an open network of streets, which
avoids the congestion of an arterial system by dispersing traffic
throughout the community.
